Dissection of a SMART Board 640

People ask "what's inside a SMART Board." Let's dissect one to find out. What else is there to do on a Sunday afternoon?

After removing the SMART Board controller, use a phillips screwdriver to remove the frame from the back of the SMART Board.

Disconnect the controller wires. Note that the SMART Board is a sandwich of two sheets of aluminum, with a honeycomb structural center.

Cut the flexible plastic outer surface from the front of the SMART Board. The controller wires are attached to tabs on this surface. Note the black coated back surfaces. When you touch on the front of the board, the X,Y position is electronically sensed, because of thin metalized strips that are attached to two sides of the flexible surface.

Plastic edging which holds the flexible front surface to the aluminum sandwich. The plastic edging is laminated to the side of the SMART Board. Metailzed edge is exposed below.

Aluminum sheet (back of the SMART Board) pulled away from the honeycomb center. The honeycomb is laminated to the aluminum sheets, making it extremely difficult to pull the sandwich apart.

The honeycomb with the back of the SMART Board pulled off and only half of the front surface remaining. |
