Hot Spots

Hot Spots is one of the LAT’s most powerful knowledge reinforcement tools.  Graphics on any subject can be used, and identifying points can be easily Drag the Hot Spots object out of the LAT Games Gallery and into Notebook software.  Click the Edit button and change the background to Custom.

You will want to create a graphic clip that has an aspect ratio of 1.65:1.  Our favorite Windows graphic software is Corel Paint Shop Pro, which lets you take a screen capture, then clip it to the pixel size or aspect ratio you want.  Alternatively, use the Screen Capture tool and keep clipping it until you get it to size, or size it as close as possible to the Hot Spots viewing area.

Save your graphic, then insert the picture into Notebook software.

This Washington DC map was pasted into Notebook software and repositioned so the upper left corner fits in the Hot Spot viewing window. It is being resized (below) by dragging on the Resize handle on the lower right corner of the image.

Once the image is resized, click on the drop-down object menu (the triangle on upper right of the image), choose Locking->Lock in Place.

Then click on the Hot Spot object frame to select it (above), pull the drop-down object menu (triangle on upper right of the image) and choose Order->Bring Forward, then Locking->Lock in Place.

Click on the Add Point button to add your Hot Spot points. Label each point, enter the question (“Where is…), set the region perimeter to see how far away from the target someone can be and still be right.

This is what the completed Hot Spot looks like after the student clicks on the Start button in the upper left corner.  The question / timer runs in the red bar at the top center of the Hot Spot object.  The mouse turns into a red and bullseye (currently on left side of page at the Lincoln Memorial).

Although the Hot Spot is the most complex LAT tool to use, it is very graphically versatile and a favorite among teachers and students.
