Attachments

The Attachments tab appears as a paperclip (top right).  The Insert a Web Link and Insert a Document buttons are at the bottom.

Notebook’s Attachments Tab allows you to attach any computer file to your Notebook presentation.  You can create (or modify) a Notebook file for your class period lecture, and attach word processing documents, PDF worksheet files, scanned JPG images, URL web links, and QuickTime movies… any data files which you have application software on your computer to display.  The Attachments Tab makes your Notebook file quite an organizational tool.

We like to compare the Attachment Tab to the file cabinets our best teachers had – full of well used and honed overhead transparencies that they used year after year.  These teachers would pull out their overheads and notes for the day’s lecture, with everything organized in one place.

Notebook files with attachments let you do the same thing for high tech teaching.  Create your presentation in Notebook software, adding attachments by clicking on the Insert a Weblink (globe) and Insert a Document (paperclip) icons at the bottom of the Attachments window.

When you attach a file using the paperclip icon, you can choose to insert a copy of the file, or create an alias that points to a file on a storage device.  We believe it is almost always better to insert a copy of the file into your Notebook page.  The only exception is if you are inserting a very large file (like a 400MB QuickTime movie).

Before you attach a hyperlink, it is best to open up a web browser (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and test your URL before attaching it.  Type the URL into the browser.  When you are sure it has gone to the correct page, highlight and copy it.  Paste it into the Notebook hyperlink box, above, as we did on the previous page.  If you want, you can type in a different display name to make it easier to find the link the next time you access it via Notebook software.
